I am Kim Mejia-Cuellar, an 18 year-old in Oakland, Calif. who had the opportunity to participate in the program Youth Greening Oakland. Under the leadership of Eric from Kijani Grows, I learned how to build an aquaponics garden. This is a garden that does not use soil. Instead, the YGO group used rocks. I learned the many advantages of growing without soil: plants take up less space, suffer from less infections and do not suffer from weeds. Aquaponic gardensrequire less labor, and I believe that it makes gardening more accessible to everyday people, especially those who live in urban areas. I enjoyed my experience building an aquaponic gardening and truly learning how it functions. It is an effective way to recycle wastes and solve the problem of malnutrition around the world. Everyone should try it!
